YSU sets summer programs to help high schoolers prepare for college

March 21, 2014  |

jump startApplication deadline is April 15 for two new summer programs at Youngstown State University aimed at helping high school students become more prepared for success in college.

Jump Start is a six-week, two-day-a-week summer program for incoming YSU freshmen who have placed into developmental English and/or math classes. Developmental classes, although non-credit, must be completed in order to enroll in introductory English and math courses for credit. Students who successfully complete the Jump Start programs, taught by part-time YSU faculty, can skip the developmental classes and enroll directly into credit-bearing introductory English and math courses in the fall semester.

The cost for Jump Start is $150 for the English portion, $180 for the math portion, or $300 for both. Developmental courses, on the other hand, can cost about $1,110 each. Jump Start courses are Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 17 through July 24, with the English portion from 9 a.m. to noon and the math portion 1 to 3 p.m. The courses are taught on the YSU campus. To register for Jump Start, visit www.ysu.edu/metro.

The second initiative, called Penguin Prep Academy, is a six-week, two-day-a-week program that focuses on helping current high school underclassmen, whose standardized test scores are shy of college readiness indicators, to become college-ready in English and Math.

The Academy, taught by part-time YSU English and math faculty, is for high school sophomores and juniors who scored 16-17 in English and/or 20-21 in Math on the ACT test. Students successfully completing the Academy courses are ready for introductory, non-developmental English and math college classes and also may qualify for the College in High School courses being offered at their high school.

The Academy runs Mondays and Wednesdays from June 16 to July 23 on the YSU campus – 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for English classes, 11 a.m. to noon for College 101, and 1 to 3 p.m. for math classes. The cost is $100 for English, $180 for math, or $250 for both. To register for the Penguin Prep Academy, visit www.ysu.edu/metrocredit.
