Chi Sigma IotaYoungstown State University’s chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, an international honor society dedicated to promoting excellence in the counseling profession, has been selected as the 2013-14 recipient of the Outstanding Chapter Individual Program Award.

The prestigious national award will be presented March 28 at the Chi Sigma Iota Awards ceremony during the American Counseling Association Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The YSU chapter, whose president is Calie Makoski, received the award for hosting the Advocacy and Leadership Summit in February 2013. The goal of the 6-hour workshop was to teach the importance of advocating for the counseling profession and to help students and professionals identify leadership qualities. A panel of professors in counseling programs from across Ohio provided insight on their experience as leaders in the counseling. In addition, State Sen. Joe Schiavoni attended to talk about legislative advocacy issues in Ohio.

Chi Sigma Iota has a membership of more than 90,000 professionals and professionals-in-training worldwide and more than 350 campus-based chapters. YSU’s Eta Chapter, the second created in Ohio, has initiated more than 700 members since 1985. Membership is balanced between current student and professional members.

The chapter’s 29th Annual Induction Banquet will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17 in the DeBartolo Stadium Club. Tom Sweeney, executive director Emeritus of Chi Sigma Iota International, who founded the national honor society in 1985, will be the keynote speaker.

Eta Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota provides valuable professional workshops, community service, fundraising events, and networking opportunities for both students and professionals.
