Hispanic Heritage Celebration Oct. 6 at YSU

Youngstown State University is celebrating Hispanic Heritage month this October.

“May I Have This Dance?” by Kevin Rodriguez, a student at Lakeside High School in Ashtabula, placed first in this year’s Hispanic Heritage Celebration art competition.

The main event of the annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration is from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on the Youngstown State University campus.

Titled “Sin Fronteras: Uniendo Nuestra Culturas (Without Boundaries:  Connecting Our Cultures),” this event features animals from the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, entertainment, children’s activities, artistic displays, student awards and a scholarship presentation by Latinas United Networking Association, as well as vendors, information tables and ethnic refreshments.

Dancers will perform from Fred Astaire Studio, Chile Tradición, New Castle Christian Academy, Sabor Latino Performers, Guerreras de Adoración, and the YSU Latino Student Organization. Music will be provided by Adrian Labra and his band as well as Katie Hankins and Conjunto Riqueña.

Jennifer Tirado from Boardman Curves will demonstrate Zumba dancing, and DJ Kenny Reyes will provide the music. Rocio Rosales and José Martinez will serve as the masters of ceremonies.

The celebration is free and open to the community. Parking is free in the Wick Avenue deck. Advise parking attendant that you are attending the Hispanic Heritage Celebration to receive a parking pass.

The celebration is coordinated by the Hispanic Heritage Celebration Planning Committee through the YSU Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity with support from campus organizations and local sponsors. For more information, call 330-941-3370.

Hispanic Heritage month is celebrated nationally and locally from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.  Other upcoming events include:

  • Sunday, Oct. 7, 3 p.m., Non-Violence Parade & Rally. The parade begins at the YSU Williamson College of Business and ends with a rally downtown. For more information, call 330-941-3370.
  • Friday, Oct. 12, 2 to 3:45 p.m., YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Avenue, Youngstown. International Coffee Hour. Mingle with YSU international students students and enjoy Latino desserts and coffee. 4 pm. Human Trafficking Discussion, featuring attorney Koula Glaros-King with Community Legal Aid
  • Wednesday, Oct. 17, 10 a.m. (English) and 11 a.m. (Spanish), OCCHA, 3660 Shirley Road, Youngstown. Health at Home Presentation by Carolina Castelli-Figley, M.D., Community Health Educator and coordinator of the Hispanic, Latino and Immigrant Health program at HMHP. The book “Health at Home” is free and has a step-by-step approach for over 200 health problems. To register, call 330-716-1449. 1 p.m. Zumba Power Hour, led by Valerie Gordon.
  • Friday, Nov. 2, 5:30 to 11 p.m., Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, 7440 South Avenue, Boardman. Organización Cívica y Cultural Hispana Americana 40th Annual Celebration and Fundraiser.
