YSU is included on the list for its use of Starfish Retention Solutions software to improve retention and grades for first- and second-year students. The software, implemented at YSU in 2011, allows faculty to flag students who are falling behind academically and to route those concerns to the students’ peer mentors and student support staff in the YSU Center for Student Progress. Early results are positive: The GPA for freshmen increased from 2.39 to 2.46 from 2011 to 2012. Classes that used the Starfish system had higher completion rates than classes that did not use the system.

“These are all results that indicate we are on the right track for increasing student progression, course completion and graduation,” said Jonelle Beatrice, YSU executive director of Student Life.
