YSU business students earn Home Savings scholarships

Three Youngstown State University students in the Williamson College of Business Administration have been awarded $2,000 scholarships from the Home Savings Charitable Foundation.

Heather Kittle of Bristolville, Jacob Powell of Canfield, and Alyssia Shaw of Youngstown were selected to receive the annual scholarship.

The Home Savings Charitable Foundation has been awarding the scholarships to YSU students for 13 years. Over the past 10 years, the Foundation has contributed more than $70,000. Students must be a junior or senior business major with an overall GPA of 3.0.

HeatherKittle is a senior in human resource management. Kittle worked in quality assurance at Sigma OH Industries in Jefferson, Ohio, and is now a department manager at Wal-Mart in Greenville, Pa. Upon graduation, she hopes to be promoted internally to assistant manager at Wal-Mart. With training and mentoring from Wal-Mart administrators, Kittle hopes to become a market manager and then store manager in the Wal-Mart chain.

Jacob Powell is a junior in accounting and has been an active two-year member of Enactus, a YSU student organization committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to transform lives. He will take the leadership role as president of Enactus in Fall 2014. He volunteers as an instructor for Junior Achievement of the Mahoning Valley for the elementary, middle school and high school classes. He currently is the store manager for Handel’s Ice Cream in Poland. After graduation, Powell will seek a Master of Business Administration degree in Accounting and take the CPA and CMA exams. He would like to be a management accountant for a large corporation.

Alyssia Shaw is a senior in accounting. She started her military career with the Army at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. She then worked as a student office assistant for the Office of Veterans Affairs at YSU. She also served a leadership role as president of YSU’s Latino Organization. Shaw is now working as an intern with Novogradac & Company in Dover, Ohio. After graduation she plans to obtain her license as a Certified Public Accountant and work for an accounting firm.
