YSU athletics starts new social media program

Youngstown State University’s athletics department has launched a new social media fan engagement program where fans can show their support for Penguins athletics through a combination of in-game social media campaigns, engaging teams on social networks and earning rewards through a new Penguin Points Social Rewards program.

Developed as part of a Horizon League initiative and in partnership with Lodestone Sports, fans receive points for participating in social media activities such as “liking” Facebook posts, commenting, sharing, tweeting hashtags, re-tweeting, watching a YouTube video and checking in on Foursquare or Facebook.

Fans can sign up for the program at penguinpoints.com.

In conjunction with the launch of the Penguin Points Social Rewards program, there are new Facebook pages for YSU’s baseball, men’s basketball, football, men’s golf, women’s golf, soccer and track and field programs. A complete listing of YSU’s athletics social media pages can be found at the newly launched YSUsports.com/social page.

“With the successful start we’ve had with our fall sports programs, we’ve received tremendous amounts of positive feedback and new followers on Facebook and Twitter,” said Ron Strollo, director of Intercollegiate Athletics “The programs developed by Lodestone Sports will allow us to engage our fans at a new level. This is an exciting time for us on campus, and we’re looking forward to interacting with our fans at our events and on social media.”

Fans can also gain points by taking polls, signing up for promotions, printing coupons and more on the “Youngstown State Penguins” Facebook Page, located at facebook.com/ysusports.

The Penguin Points program tracks overall point leaders, athletics leaders and individual team leaders. In addition, fans can sign up for special promotions, coupons or become the Fan of the Week on team Facebook pages. There will be grand prizes, giveaways and special fan experiences Penguins supporters can earn through their social media activity.
