Recyclemania-2014Youngstown State University is again participating in RecycleMania, a national eight-week competition to see which colleges reduce, reuse and recycle the most on-campus waste.

Hundreds of schools and millions of students, faculty and staff are participating across the United States and Canada. Schools compete in 11 categories to see which recycles the most on a per capita basis, which produces the least amount of waste, and which recycles the largest percentage of their overall waste stream. The competition runs through March 30.

“I hope that participating in RecycleMania creates more awareness towards YSU’s recycling program on campus, and that it will get more students, faculty and staff to participate, not just during the competition, but hopefully recycling will become engrained in their daily lives,” said Dan Kuzma, who directs YSU’s recycling programs.

Last year, YSU finished 40th overall in the competition out of 273 colleges and universities, Kuzma said. YSU will again operate the “Get Caught Green-handed” campaign during RecycleMania. Under the campaign, randomly selected students, on any particular day, will be rewarded for being caught recycling on campus.
