Winds featured at concert April 29

The Youngstown State University Wind Ensemble and Dana Chamber Winds closes the 2012-13 performance season with a concert titled “Abundant Air” at 8 p.m. Monday, April 29, in Stambaugh Auditorium.

The concert will feature several ensembles from the wind and percussion program in the YSU Dana School of Music and is part of the 2013 Dana New Music Festival.

The program includes the Dana Trombone Choir, led by Dr. Michael Crist and Professor John Olsson performing a new fanfare for trombone choir, organ, and percussion by Thomas Pavlochiko, Dana School of Music alumnus. Two works by the Dana Chamber Winds Brass Ensemble, conducted by graduate conducting students, Eric Bable and Christopher Williams will follow. The Wind Ensemble will perform “Symphony No. 1: My Brother’s Brain” by Carter Pann, an award-winning composer who has previously appeared as a guest artist at YSU.

Guest artist and composer Perry Goldstein, Chair of SUNY at Stony Brook’s School of Music, will be in residence during the New Music Festival. The Wind Ensemble and the Dana Saxophone Quartet will perform Goldstein’s “Abundant Air: Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Wind Ensemble.” The 2012-13 Dana Saxophone Quartet includes Mark Higgins, soprano saxophone, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Rebecca Little, alto saxophone, from Tuskahoma, Okla.; Brian Newell, tenor saxophone, Peoria, Ill.;  and Kevin Snyder, baritone saxophone, from Pittsburgh, Pa.
