Welcome Week activities kick off start of 2013-14 academic year

Students move into YSU residence halls starting Aug. 17 as the 2013-14 academic year begins this week.

Cookouts, movies, a dance party, Boot Camp with the Greeks, karaoke and much more are planned as Youngstown State University kicks off the 2013-14 academic year with a variety of Welcome Week activities.

Fall semester classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Saturday, August 17

  • Housing Move-In, 1 to 7 p.m. Cafaro House, Lyden House, and Kilcawley House (First-Year Residents).
  • Grocery Bingo, 6 to 8 p.m. Lyden House Green. Winners take home a container of groceries.
  • Ice Cream Social, 8:30 pm, Kilcawley House Fountain.

Sunday, August 18

  • Housing Move-In, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cafaro House, Lyden House, Wick House, Weller House, and Kilcawley House (All Residents).
  • Andrews Student Recreation & Wellness Center Open House, 1 to 6 p.m.
  • Minute to Win It, 5 to 6 p.m., Volleyball Court, Christman Greens (Rain Location: Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center).
  • Welcome Mass and BBQ, 6 pm., Catholic Newman Center, 254 W. Madison Avenue.
  • Kickball Wars, 6 to 8 p.m., Lyden House Green.

Monday, August 19

  • State of the University Address, 10 a.m., Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center. Campus and community invited to attend President Randy J. Dunn’s first State of the University Address.
  • Kupita/Transiciones, 1 to 4 p.m., James Gallery, Kilcawley Center. This is a student transition program designed to provide new and returning learners with the opportunity to become familiar with campus resources.
  • Boot Camp with the Greeks, 5 to 9 p.m. Christman Greens.
  • Outdoor Movie, 9 pm, Cafaro and Lyden House Green.

Tuesday, August 20

  • Student Leadership Summit, 8 a .m. to 2 p.m., Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center. Guest speakers, interactive leadership sessions, giveaways and lunch. The summit provides a unique opportunity for student organization leaders to network and get to know other organization members, all the while learning of the many features that are available to all of our registered organizations.
  • Student Diversity Programs, Student/Faculty Meet and Greet, 3 to 5 p.m.,  James Gallery, Kilcawley Center. This social hour is designed for faculty and staff to partner with YSU learners and establish relationships that can contribute to short and long-term success for students.
  • Big Chair Photo, 4 to 8 p.m., Christman Dining Patio.
  • Back to School Blast Off!, 4 to 8 p.m., Christman Greens.

Wednesday, August 21

  • Get Organized for Success in College with Office 365, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bresnahan Training Room, Kilcawley Center. Students learn about the Microsoft® Office 365 YSU email system.
  • Rookery Radio: Boot Camp Cadences, 10 a.m. to 2p.m., Campus Core and in front of Tod Hall. Rookery Radio and CW-WBCB, plays “Boot Camp Cadences” (music to get you moving).
  • Recycling Warrior Dash, 10 a.. to 2 p.m. Maag Library Courtyard by the Wick Ave. Bridge. Students test their recycling knowledge to see if they can sort the salvageable items from the “trash” before time runs out and get entered in a drawing to win a gift card.
  • Caricature Artist , 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Campus.
  • The Block Party @ Kilcawley Center/Campus Resource Fair, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center.
  • Rock Capitol Live Karaoke, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center.

  • Recycling Warrior Dash, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Maag Library Courtyard by the Wick Avenue bridge.
  • University Police Crime and Safety Information, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Campus Core.
  • The Freshman 15: Let’s Make It A Myth!, 11 to 11:45 a.m., Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Aerobic Studio. The average college student gains fifteen pounds during their first year of college. There are ways to avoid this weight gain by making healthier choices at meal times, increasing fitness activity, and making smart lifestyle changes.
  • Rappel Flad Mountain Penguin Boot Camp Style, 11 a.m. to 1 pm., Andrews Student Recreation & Wellness Center, Flad Mountain.
  • Just Dance Party, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Gallery, Kilcawley Center.

  • Zip Line – Hang Out on Campus …or Above It !, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., North Hazel Street (Between Lincoln and Rayen Avenues). Test your limits and get a taste of adventure by soaring across campus on a zip line. Start your journey 30 feet above campus, and ride the line back down to solid ground.
