AME bishop speaks at MLK breakfast Jan. 24

Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, the 117thelected and consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, is the keynote speaker at Youngstown State University’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Breakfast 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24.

The breakfast in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on the YSU campus also includes the presentation of the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Awards.

Tickets are $25 and $12 for students. Tickets go on sale Monday, Jan. 7, at the YSU Information and PC Lab on the second floor of Kilcawley Center, near the elevator. Group and table purchases will be handled through the YSU Office of Student Diversity Programs. McKenzie’s historic election in 2000 represents the first time in the more than 200-year history of the AME Church that a woman had obtained the level of Episcopal office. She currently is the presiding prelate of the 10th Episcopal District of Texas. McKenzie has been appointed by President Obama to serve on the President’s Advisory Council of the White House Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. She also is a member of the Board of Trustees of Payne Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, and the International Theological Center in Atlanta.
