The thrill of publishing: “Like a little kid on Christmas”

Your first day of kindergarten. Your first date. Your first child…Your first published scholarly paper.

“I’m like a little kid on Christmas,” says Amanda Roby, assistant professor of Health Professions.

Roby, who joined YSU’s full-time faculty this fall semester, published her first scholarly article in the fall 2013 edition of Respiratory Care Education Annual from the American Association for Respiratory Care.

YSU faculty published 230 articles in peer-reviewed publications this past fiscal year, in addition to 1,045 citations and 266 creative works. But there’s nothing like the first. YSUpdate, which regularly lists many of these accomplishments, features in this issue a new faculty member’s first foray into the scholarly publishing field.

Roby, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care from YSU in 2000 and a master’s of Health and Human Services from YSU in 2011, said the process of researching, writing and publishing the article was a roller coaster. “So many deadlines, so many revisions and so many days of just waiting,” she said.

The article, titled “Disruptive Behavior in the Respiratory Care Workplace,” was co-authored by Sal Sanders, associate dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research; John Hazy, associate professor of Criminal Justice; and Teresa Volsko, director of Respiratory Care and Transport at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Roby credited Sanders and Hazy, who she said supported her “throughout the process with patience and knowledge while allowing me the room to work in my own way.”

“For those new to academia, it seems essential to rely on the experiences of seasoned faculty members,” she added.

The study, which included a survey of nearly 120 respiratory therapists, concluded that disruptive behavior – such as verbal abuse, bullying and aggression – does exist across different job classifications in the respiratory workplace.

Roby was working as a respiratory therapist at St. Elizabeth Health Center when she began teaching part-time in the YSU Respiratory Care program. After earning the master’s degree, Roby accepted a position at Cuyahoga Community College teaching in the polysomnography program, which studies that treatment of sleep disorders. She accepted the faculty position at YSU this summer and began teaching polysomnography and respiratory care classes in August.

“Being back at YSU is like a wonderful homecoming,” she said.

In her first two months on the job, Roby said she has been devoting a tremendous amount of time to class preparation, while also keeping a focus on her research, writing journal articles, undertaking department committee work, getting to know other faculty members, and watching and learning how the department functions.

She said that polysomnography and respiratory care are the best kept secrets in the allied health field. “I love the way the college has been on the cutting edge of emerging trends like the area of sleep studies,” she said. “I pack a lot into my waking hours – but have helped countless students learn the finer points of identifying problems that occur in the non-waking ones.”
