Panel to discuss charter schools, testing

testingA panel discussion titled “Accountability: Charter Schools and High-Stakes Testing in Ohio” will be 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, at Union Baptist Church, 528 Lincoln Ave., Youngstown.

The discussion, co-sponsored by Youngstown State University Beeghly College of Education, will include the following panelists:

  • Doug Oplinger of the Akron Beacon Journal, “What Journalists Can – and Cannot – Tell You About Charter Schools.”
  • Sherry Tyson, assistant treasurer of the Youngstown City Schools, “What Choice Costs Youngstown Taxpayers.”
  • Ronald J. Iarussi, superintendent of Mahoning County Educational Service Center, “Testing and Mandates in the New Age of Accountability.”
  • Randy Hoover, YSU professor emeritus, “The Reality of Student and School Academic Performance.”

The moderator of the discussion is the League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown.
