A group of 15 students in Youngstown State University’s Center for Nonprofit Leadership participated in a Regional Case Study Exercise at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh early this month. (March)

The students were asked to solve two challenge questions addressing issues the organization is currently facing. The two challenge questions dealt with volunteer management and how to engage young professional donors. The day consisted of a tour, Q&A with key staff, brainstorming solutions to the challenge questions, and then presenting the solutions to the 13 members of the Carnegie Science Center executive staff. While 15 students participated in the Case Study Exercise, four students served as the Presentation Team. Those four students were Sarah Gordon of Hubbard, Danielle Adair of Youngstown, Alison Hall of Boardman and Taslim Patterson of Warren.

“Working with the students from Youngstown State University’s Center for Nonprofit Leadership was an invigorating and thought provoking experience for our leadership team at the Carnegie Science Center,” said host/coordinator Alana Kulesa, director of Strategic Education Initiatives. “Their fresh perspectives and innovative suggestions helped us explore new opportunities for our organization that have great promise in helping us fulfill our mission to delight, educate and inspire through interactive experiences in science and technology.”

The Center for Nonprofit Leadership Regional Case Study Exercise provides students seeking the Nonprofit Leadership Minor and/or Certificate opportunities to network and explore careers outside the Mahoning Valley, but still in the “Tech Belt” region. The event also exposes YSU students to nonprofit professionals outside the immediate area.

In October 2013, the Center for Nonprofit Leadership had 13 students participate in a similar Regional Case Study Exercise in Cleveland to solve challenge questions presented by the Catholic Community Foundation.
