Forbes names YSU a Top College

ForbesForbes magazine has included Youngstown State University as one of America’s Top Colleges for 2013.

“To have YSU on the list of the nation’s top schools is an achievement worth noting and an accomplishment of which we can all be very proud,” YSU President Randy J. Dunn said. “Our students and alumni are well aware of YSU’s excellence; it’s gratifying to see that affirmed by a reputable, independent source such as Forbes.”

The rankings, developed by Forbes in partnership with the Washington, D.C.-based Center for College Affordability and Productivity, are based on a variety of measurements, including student satisfaction, post-graduate success, student debt and graduation rate.

“What sets our calculation … apart from other rankings is our firm belief in ‘output’ over ‘input,’” Forbes says. “We’re not all that interested in what gets a student into college … Our sights are set directly on Return on Investment: What are students getting out of college.”

In all, Forbes lists 650 colleges and universities in the rankings.

While YSU ranks 638 on the list, Dunn noted that there are nearly 2,000 four-year universities and colleges in the nation, which means about two-thirds of the schools didn’t even make it into the rankings.

“Just to be included on the list means that we are among the top one-third of four-year institutions in the nation, which is something very much worthy of our attention,” he said.

The Forbes ranking is the latest in a string of honors for YSU this summer. YSU placed 21st among nearly 400 post-secondary institutions in Ohio for providing the greatest lifetime return on investment in a report released earlier this summer by AffordableCollegesOnline.org. In addition, a study by OnlineCollegesDatabase.org ranked YSU’s Beeghly College of Education as one of the nation’s top 40 schools for teacher education. And, edCetera, an education technology blog, recently cited YSU as one of 10 schools nationwide for its use of cutting edge technology.
