Faculty Summit on Student Engagement this week

Youngstown State University hosts a Faculty Summit on Student Engagement 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the Presidential Suites of Kilcawley Center.

The Summit focuses on best practices in using student engagement activities to enhance the teaching-learning process, research and scholarship, and service to the local, regional and global communities.

The Summit will feature YSU faculty and staff participating and leading panel discussions and breakout sessions. The schedule:

8 a.m. – Registration and Refreshments.

8:30 a.m. Welcome, Provost Ikram Khawaja.

Panel #1: Best Practices in Student Engagement, moderated by Betty Jo Licata, dean of the Williamson College of Business Administration. Panelists include Tim Francisco, Ph.D. (English), The NewsOutlet; Joy Polkabla-Byers (Campus Recreation & Student Programming), Emerging Leaders Program; Jeanine Mincher, Ph.D. (Human Ecology)/Christine Kotapish (TCAP), partnerships between faculty and community leaders; Jacob Stanley (Housing & Residence Life), Living Learning Communities.

9:30 a.m.        Break

9:45 a.m. – Concurrent Breakout Session #1
Option A: Global Engagement Activities
, panelists Audrey Ellenwood, Ph.D. (Counseling & Special Education), South Africa Student Learning Experience; Bruce Keillor, Ph.D. (Marketing), London Learning Experience; and Ron Shaklee, Ph.D. (Geography), Bahamas Student Learning Experience.

Option B: Best practices in setting objectives, evaluation outcomes, assessment for student internship placements, panelists Marty Cala, Ph.D. (STEM), Suzanne Giuffre (HHS), & Dan Van Dussen Ph.D. (Gerontology).

10:30 a.m.                  Break

10:45 a.m.Concurrent Breakout Session #2
Option A: Developing a Service Learning Course/Working with regional nonprofit organizations, panelists Jaietta Jackson (Communications/FPA), Laura McCaskey (WCBA), Mark Zetts (Hospitality Management/HHS).

Option B: Developing engagement activities/student projects with for-profit businesses, panelists Michael Hripko (STEM) and Patrick Gaughan (WCBA).

Panel #2 – Resources and Recognition, panelists Maureen Drummond (HandsOn Volunteer Network) and Laura McCaskey (WCBA).
