Jim Andrews and Mike Crescimanno, professors, Physics and Astronomy, and graduate student Bijayandra Shakya, were among the authors of the paper, “Co-extruded mechanically tunable multilayer elastomer laser,” which was based on experiments done at YSU in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University. The paper was listed among the Top Downloaded Articles in Organics and Polymers for the past year in Optical Materials Express. The paper describes fabrication and testing of a 128-layer multilayer film surface-emitting dye laser that can be tuned repeatedly over a 50 nanometer range by simple stretching of the film.

Sharon Shanks, lecturer, Ward Beecher Planetarium, was invited to write the lead article for the premiere issue of Planetaria, the magazine of the Brazilian Planetarium Association. The first issue appeared in March 2014. Shanks wrote the article in her role as editor of Planetarian, the professional journal of the International Planetarium Society.

Gabriel Palmer-Fernandez, director, Dr. James Dale Ethics Center, and professor, Philosophy and Religious Studies, presented the lectures “Ethics of Whistleblowing: Snowden, Manning & Others” at the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown and “Issues in Bioethics – Past & Future” at the College Club in Sharon, Pa. In addition, he presented the paper “Combatant Status and Interrogation Techniques” at the Twenty-Third Annual Meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics.  He was also nominated to serve a second term on the association’s board of directors.
