Dana presents “Octubafest,” Jazz Combos, Fall Choral Concert

The River Bottom Quartet

The River Bottom Quartet, which includes Brian Kiser, YSU assistant professor of Tuba and Euphonium, performs as part of the Dana School of Music’s “Octubafest” celebration.

The Dana School of Music celebrates this month the rich heritage of the tuba and euphonium with “Octubafest.” The School also presents a concert by the Jazz Combos on Oct. 17 and the Fall Choral Concert on Oct. 21.

“Octubafest”

“Octubafest” was established in Octuba (October) 1973 by Harvey Philips, professor emeritus of Indiana University School of Music. Dana’s “Octubafest” events include:

Monday, Oct. 14, 8 p.m. Brian Kiser, YSU assistant professor of Tuba and Euphonium, is the featured soloist with the YSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble at Stambaugh Auditorium. Kiser will perform a new tuba concerto by Donald Grantham.

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 7:30 p.m. The River Bottom Quartet performs at Butler North. The Quartet includes four musicians from the River City Brass, of which Kiser is a member. The concert features overtures, Bach, modern jazz, tango music, original compositions.

Monday, Oct. 28, 8 p.m. Dana tuba and euphonium students perform in Bliss Recital Hall, including the YSU premiere of a new piece by James Grant – “10 Blind Dates for Solo Tuba.” The performance features all Dana tuba majors and Kiser.

Wednesday, Oct. 30, 12:15 p.m. The YSU Tuba-Euphonium ensemble perform a free Music at Noon concert at the Butler Institute of American Art.

Wednesday, Oct. 30, 8 p.m. Dana tuba and euphonium students perform in in Bliss Recital Hall, showcasing their creative performing skills and Halloween costumes.

Jazz Combos

Dana’s Jazz Combos perform 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in Kilcawley Center’s Hub. The free concert will feature jazz standards, American Songbook standards and original music, led by Dana instructor Dave Kana. Groups performing including:

Choral Concert

Dana’s Fall Choral Concert titled, “Mystery of Life: Birth to Death,” will be 8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 21, in St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown.

The concert will feature the YSU Dana Chorale, University Chorus, Symphonic Choir and the Dana Percussion Ensemble. Hae-Jong Lee will conduct; Kathy Miller will accompany; and Marissa Knaub is guest harpist.

The concert is free and open to the public. A free-will donation will be collected.
The repertoire features selections representing birth and death, from among others, contemporary composer Tarik O’Regan and Benjamin Britten. The Ceremony of Carols will pay tribute to Benjamin Britten. The concert will end with a powerful gospel song Shout Glory!
