The Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University is sponsoring three events as part of the Fall 2012 Business and Professional Development Seminar Series.  

The series is designed to advance the skills and expertise of professionals in the private, public and nonprofit sectors.

The series features the following seminars:

Seminar #1, Friday, Oct. 26: “Expanding Your Market by Going Global” with facilitator Mousa H. Kassis (see below). Participants will learn how to “work local and think global.” Each participant will learn how to assess new global markets, how to determine their organization’s readiness to begin exporting, and find the resources available to support the development of an export strategy.

Seminar #2, Friday, Nov. 2: “Social Media Best Practices” with facilitator Patrick Bateman (see below). Through the examination of best practices of companies from a variety of industries, this seminar will help participants’ understand, plan, and strategize how to use social media to communicate with customers to create value.

Seminar #3, Friday, Nov. 9: “Best Practices in Human Resources” with facilitator Jacob Breland (see below). This seminar is designed to acquaint the non-HR manager with an overview of the HR function. Emphasis will be placed on managing talent strategically within the bounds of the legal landscape. Discussions will be highly interactive, highlighting practices that cut across multiple work settings and industries. Topics will include recruiting and selection, training and development, performance evaluation, incentives and measurement of human contributions.

All seminars will in the WCBA Conference Center on the third floor of Williamson Hall. Parking is available on Wood Street. Registration and continental breakfast for each seminar will take place from 8: to 8:30 a.m. The program will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The cost is $100 per session. Advanced registration and payment is required. Online registration is available on the Williamson College of Business website. Seating is limited.

Mousa H. Kassis currently serves as the International Trade Advisor with the International Trade Assistance Center at the YSU Small Business Development Seminar. He has owned and managed businesses in the Mahoning Valley for more than 20 years, and he has been in the export business for the last five years, exporting products such as mining equipment, solar energy plants and water purification projects. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from YSU and serves as a part-time faculty member in the YSU Economics Department.

Patrick J. Bateman is an assistant professor of Management. He has a background as a financial analyst, corporate education manager and technical analyst in the banking and financial services industries. His teaching and research interests include the dynamics of social media and individuals’ use of interactive media. He earned a Ph.D. in Information Systems at the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh.

Jacob Breland

Jacob W. Breland is an assistant professor of Management. In this role, he serves his students and larger community as a resource for HR-related information. He routinely publishes, consults and speaks on topics relevant to maximizing the returns from their human talent. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Mississippi and a master’s of business administration from the University of Southern Mississippi. He also holds the Senior Professional in Human Resources designation, an internationally recognized certification awarded by the Society for Human Resource Management for those with significant levels of HR knowledge and experience.
