Alum establishes internship scholarship for economics students
Youngstown State University undergraduate students majoring in economics or business economics can now seek support from an internship scholarship established by one of the department’s most successful alumni.
The Joseph G. Carson Internship Scholarship is designed to support students pursuing internships outside of the region or unpaid internships.
Carson, who graduated from YSU with a master’s degree in Economics, is a senior vice president and the director of Global Economic Research for AllianceBernstein, a financial asset management company that is responsible for investing more than $400 billion. Carson oversees the team responsible for analyzing U.S. economic activity and interest rates, and he is regularly quoted in the financial media. During the 1990’s, while he was chief U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank, Carson was named to the Institutional Investor All-Star Team for Fixed Income.
The intent of the scholarship is to give students financial support so they can pursue internships that they otherwise might not have considered. For example, the scholarship could help defray the living expenses of an internship at a financial institution in New York or a government agency in Washington D.C.
“We are very grateful for Joe Carson’s willingness to provide this opportunity to our students,” said Tod Porter, chair of the YSU Department of Economics.
First priority will be given to students who intern outside the Youngstown-Warren metropolitan area. The second highest priority will be given to unpaid internships within the local metropolitan area. The maximum scholarship will be $2,500. Factors deciding the amount of the scholarship will include financial need and the amount of additional living expenses resulting from the internship. The internships can be completed during the regular school year or the summer term.
Students are encouraged to meet with the department chair well in advance of when they hope to intern and talk about possible opportunities for internships even if an internship is not yet planned. For more information about the scholarship, contact Porter at firstname.lastname@example.org.
