Advisement expert visits campus April 10

Charlie Nutt, executive director of the National Academic Advising Association, visits YSU on Tuesday, April 10.

During the visit, he will make the following presentations in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center:

  • 9 to 10 a.m. “Why General Education Matters” with Tod Porter, YSU General Education chair. Session open to faculty, staff and students.
  • 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. session “Student Success @YSU: The Importance of Faculty Advising.” Session primarily for faculty, but interested staff may attend.
  • 3 to 4:30 p.m. “Academic Advising at the University of Utopia: Envisioning an Ideal Academic Advising Experience.” Session for faculty, staff and invited students.

The Office of the Provost, as well as the YSU Office of Assessment and the Youngstown State Academic Advising Association, is sponsoring Nutt’s visit.

Nutt earned an associate degree in English from Coastal Georgia Community College (formerly Brunswick College), a bachelor’s in English Education from the University of Georgia, a master’s in Administration and Supervision from Georgia Southern University, and Doctorate in Educational Leadership in Higher Education from Georgia Southern University.

He has taught both at the secondary and post-secondary levels since 1977. At Coastal Georgia Community College, he was assistant professor of English before being appointed director of Orientation and Advising. He next served as vice president for Student Development Services until he moved to the NACADA executive office.

He has served in various leadership roles in NACADE, including Region IV Representative, Two-Year College Commission Chair, 2000 National Conference Chair, Chair of Re-organization Implementation Committee, Chair of Task Force on Faculty Advising, and President-Elect. In addition, he has served on the faculty of the NACADA Summer Institute, Academic Advising Administrators’ Institute and Assessment of Advising Institute.
